The 50 Year Storm is run at Bells Beach between 1st June and 31st August, to raise awareness for people's mental wellbeing. Over $45,000 has been raised so far and donated to One in Five and headspace, 50 Year Storms’s charity partners.

SOME LIFE HACKS FOR MENTAL HEALTH

 
  • Most people think that breathing is an automatic function, but it can actually be controlled. As we age we become lazy at it and it is said to be leading to dysfunctional breathing.

    As surfers we sometimes need to hold our breath, when we wipe out. If you want to do some breath hold work, contact Jeff Rowley for his paddle-in mastery course.

    We suggest trying some of the following:

    Read Breath by James Nestor

    Try the Wim Hoff

    Try square breathing

  • Getting the right amount of quality sleep can give you more energy, improve concentration, help you better deal with stress and improve your overall mental wellbeing.

    We suggest no screens an hour before bed time, dimming the lights and breathing through the nose when you sleep.

    Getting to bed early will allow you to get up early for a surf.

  • Keeping a positive mindset allows you to live your life in a meaningful way and cope with life’s changes and challenges. Keep doing the stuff you love to do and the things that are important to you. It can help keep the fun in your life, give you a sense of accomplishment and purpose, boost your confidence and help to connect with others.

  • Spending time with family, friends (including pets) and people in your community can help strengthen your mental health and wellbeing.

  • Talk about what’s on your mind, get information about what help is available, treatment options and how you can build new coping skills.

  • It’s known that the number one factor that leads to happiness is Self Control….
